I have been unemployed for 10 weeks now. It’s still a very strange feeling to wake up in the mornings and to have nowhere to go. Most mornings I have had to get up early still to take my daughter to school, and some afternoons I have also fetched her from school.
When I worked, she used to call Uber to take her home from school almost every day. Our uber account used to be quite high and we have reached the “every 5th ride free” promo more than once.
But last week she passed her driver’s test and she can now drive herself to school! Now this is long overdue and there were times when I thought this day would never come. My daughter started driving lessons about five years ago. She has had four driving instructors and probably about thirty driving lessons – we’ve lost count. But as each driving instructor fell by the wayside and uber continued to be so convenient, the motivation to get her driver’s license seemed to disappear.
She has also had a car waiting for her to drive for more than two years. When my father-in-law bought his little Honda Jazz about 9 years ago, he said that when he could no longer drive that he would give the car to my daughter. He passed away about 5 years ago and 2 years ago my mother-in-law stopped driving and it has been parked in our garage ever since. Although the car is old, the old folk looked after it really well and they racked up under 30,000km whereas average usage would have been about plus 100,000km. I could never understand how looking at your own car every morning was not a motivator for my daughter to get her license.
And in the meantime, her much younger cousin turned 18 in January, took 10 lessons in 4 weeks and got her license in February! So while I am incredibly grateful that she has finally got her driver’s license and that she can start to be more independent, it feels like yet another reason for me to get up in the morning has disappeared.
So I am thankful that I will have another reason for getting up in the mornings from next week.
I start the group coaching sessions on Wednesday this week and thereafter I have a group session every Wednesday and Thursday. I will also start one of the individual coaching sessions either this week or next week. And one of my colleagues has asked me to help coach two of her team members who have been on training but who don’t seem to understand how to execute on their roles.
My word for the week is thankful. If it resonates with you, please feel free to adopt it and let me know how it worked for you.
Until next time ☕️
